Carbs are back…here is why!

Protein, carbs, and fats are three micronutrients that are found in all food sources. For our bodies to function properly, we need all three. Sadly, many diets restrict or completely eliminate consumption of one or more of the three micronutrients. Such an approach to diet, not only starves our bodies and brains from receiving necessary nourishment, it also robs us from our natural ability to regulate and maintain ideal body weight. So instead, I recommend and promote a diet based on all of the three elements. Thankfully,Carbs are back! Just like how there are fashion trends- flared jeans, polka dots, stripes, skorts (lol), there are diet trends, and unfortunately not all of them are accurate-more specifically, the NO carb diet. Thankfully, carbs are back, carbs are important, and here is why:

Carbs are necessary for your body in a different but equally crucial way. Carbs can  be broken down into simple carbs and complex carbs. Simple carbs can provide your body with quick bursts of energy (think orange juice) while complex carbs will provide your body with long-lasting energy (think yam or sweet potato).  Also,  picking good sources of carbs can help you control your blood sugar and your weight. Even if you don’t have diabetes, eating healthier carbohydrate-rich foods can help ward off a host of chronic conditions, from heart disease to various cancers to, well, diabetes. Wow- healthy carbs can ward off diseases–I love it! But of course, portion size of carbs is important–too much or too little something is always bad. You can go to my book Sima’s Healthy Indulgence for table charts on the perfect portioning size of carbohydrates for different meals of the day! Are you not SO happy to learn that a healthy portion of carbs are good for you, because let’s face it–carbs are delicious!
